DES Moines, Iowa — Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Zach Wahls has called on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to step down from his leadership role.
This comes after some Senate Democrats joined Republicans in passing a funding bill to reopen the government with a promise from the GOP caucus that they would later vote on extending the Affordable Care Act.
Wahls said Democrats gave up their leverage and should have held out to ensure Iowans would be able to get affordable healthcare coverage.
“What we saw last night was unacceptable,” State Sen. Wahls said. “It was a travesty for hard working families and peoples whose healthcare costs were already unaffordable and I will say it’s an outright betrayal. Senator Chuck Schumer was unable to lead this party at the exact moment when it was time to fight and I think it is clear as day that it is time for him to step down from his leadership role and make way for a new generation of leaders.”
Even though Sen. Schumer did vote against the funding measure, he is now facing scrutiny from other Congressional Democrats over his ability to leader his caucus.
