HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHP) — Governor Josh Shapiro was recently listed fifth in a poll asking voters who they would support in the 2028 Democratic presidential primary.
According to Emerson College Polling in June, when asked the question, “Looking ahead to the 2028 Democratic presidential race, among the following candidates, who would you support for the Democratic Nomination,” 7% of responders said they would support Governor Josh Shapiro when faced with 15 options.
Pete Buttigieg garnered the most support with 16%, followed by Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez.
Behind Shapiro in the poll are Bernie Sanders and Corey Booker—though outweighing support for any individual candidate is the percentage of those undecided, listed at 23%.
Questions and speculation surrounding Shapiro’s political future are not new.
Last July, after President Biden backed out of the 2024 presidential election and endorsed Vice President Harris, Josh Shapiro appeared on a short list of names being considered for Harris’ vice presidential nominee.

CBS 21 News asked viewers on Facebook if they would vote for Shapiro, if he were to appear on the ballot, and support was mixed.
In November of 2024, a different Emerson poll allowed voters to write-in their own candidates for the 2028 primary. In that poll, Shapiro received 3% support, the fourth highest name. Harris took the majority of support at 37%, followed by Newsom at 7%, Buttigieg at 4%, and then Shapiro.
Emerson’s latest poll also breaks down potential support for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, with JD Vance receiving an overwhelming 46% of support. Marco Rubio received 12% of support, Ron Desantis received 8%, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. 5%. Seventeen percent of voters in that poll said they were currently undecided.
