What is the history of TCPalm / Treasure Coast Newspapers, including Indian River Press Journal, St. Lucie News-Tribune and Stuart News?

TCPalm / Treasure Coast Newspapers is one of the oldest businesses in Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties.

In the early 1900s, the newspapers across what is now the Treasure Coast were independently owned and fierce competitors. Mergers and sales of the newspapers across the region date back more than a century.

In 1917, The Stuart News formed from the merger of the Stuart Times (1913) and Stuart Messenger (1915). It first became a daily newspaper in 1925 — the same year Martin County formed from St. Lucie and Palm Beach counties. It changed ownerships nine times.

To the north, the Fort Pierce News Tribune was created in 1920 from the merger of the St. Lucie County Tribune (1905) and the Fort Pierce News (1902). It first became a daily publication in 1926. It had at least six owners.

Around the same time even farther north, the owner of the Vero Beach Journal (1926) purchased the Vero Press (1919) and created the Vero Beach Press Journal in 1927. The Schumann family was the longest newspaper owner in the area and the last family to own a daily newspaper in Florida before it sold the publication in 1996 to Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps Co.

By that time, Scripps already owned The Stuart News in Martin County and its sister paper Port St. Lucie News in southern St. Lucie County. In 2000, Scripps traded two north Florida newspapers plus cash to Freedom Communications for the Fort Pierce News Tribune.

This strategic move to cluster newspapers in “growing, mid-sized markets” ultimately led to the formation of Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, retaining the individual newspaper names and identities but consolidating internal departments such as leadership and printing presses.

In 2015, Scripps merged with Journal Communications and spun off its newspapers — including the three Treasure Coast newspapers — into a new company called Journal Media Group.

A year later, Gannett purchased JMG and dropped “Scripps” from the name of the Treasure Coast newspaper group. TCPalm / Treasure Coast Newspapers became part of Gannett’s USA TODAY Network, with over 200 newspapers across the country.

Gannett is the largest newspaper company in the United States. It includes the flagship USA TODAY and other large metropolitan newspapers such as the Detroit Free Press, Arizona Republic and Palm Beach Post.
