During Geno Smith’s first stint with the Jets, Matt Simms served as one of his backup quarterbacks. Twelve years later, Simms helped coach up Smith this offseason.

Simms now runs “Simms Complete” in North Jersey, specializing in coaching quarterbacks from the youth level through the pros. A few months ago, Smith called up Simms and asked whether he would work with him when he returned to New Jersey before training camp.

The two did just that the week before the Jets went to camp. They spent three days on a field in Franklin Lakes, N.J., along with several of Smith’s teammates, working on some of the finer points of playing quarterback.

“He actually reached out to me a few months ago just saying that, ‘Hey, when I come back into town, I would love to get some work with you,’” Simms said. “’I see the stuff that you’re doing and your coaching, your drills, and just want to get some lessons and learn what you’re doing.’
