All too often, you can kind of see where the story is heading in WWE. Sami Zayn being the special guest referee for Cody Rhodes and Gunther’s WWE championship rematch was not an example of that — it’s such a perfect twist.
It will put Zayn’s internal conflict front and center and force him to make a definitive choice between helping and screwing Rhodes and he will masterfully have this play out throughout the entire contest.
You could have Zayn do one more valiant act for Rhodes, who would be unappreciative of it, and that would finally set the former Intercontinental champion over the edge and add another heelish sliver to the “American Nightmare.”
Zayn could flat-out screw Rhodes. It gives WWE the chance to walk away with potentially two hot stories if Zayn costs his former friend the championship. Rhodes would be chasing a trilogy rematch with Gunther to regain the title at Night of Champions and the story with Zayn would be even hotter.
