President Trump gushed over the Village People to the leaders of Canada and Mexico on Friday after breaking out his signature “YMCA” dance at FIFA’s World Cup 2026 draw in Washington.
Jeremy Freeman, an expert witness forensic lip reader based in the United Kingdom, told The Post he observed Trump mouthing the letters of the disco group’s iconic song and even trying to convince first lady Melania Trump to sing or dance along.
“I love this,” Trump said to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as they watched the performance with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and the first lady, according to Freeman.
After breaking out his “YMCA” shimmy, Trump explained to Carney and Sheinbaum what he loves about the Village People – who performed at the president’s inauguration festivities earlier this year.
“Come on, they make me happy,” Trump told the world leaders, according to the expert lip-reader.
“Come on, join in,” the commander-in-chief said to Melania at another point.
Victor Willis, the group’s lead singer who dresses in a traffic cop outfit on stage, said in an interview with “Fox & Friends” last year that he backed off his opposition to Trump playing “YMCA” at rallies and events because the president “seems to genuinely like the song.”
“[Trump] seemed to be bringing so much joy to the American people with this use of ‘YMCA,’” Willis added.
The US, Canada and Mexico are co-hosting the 2026 World Cup.
Trump indicated that he is getting on well with the two world leaders ahead of the global soccer tournament despite the trade tensions since he took office.
“We’re getting along,” Trump told reporters at the Kennedy Center, ahead of the event.
“I think we have a meeting set up for some time after the event,” he added.
The trio met privately, with no staff in the room, for about 50 minutes after the draw, according to the CBC.
Trump has slapped a 35% tariff on Canadian imports and a 25% duty on Mexican goods, along with separate levies for steel, aluminum, automobiles, lumber and copper.
Friday’s meeting marked the first in-person discussions between Trump and Sheinbaum, and the first private talks between Trump and Carney since the president cut-off trade negotiations with Canada in October.
