President Donald Trump sent out a four-word post on Truth Social late Tuesday, shortly after California voters dealt another Election Day blow to Republicans.

“…AND SO IT BEGINS!” Trump wrote at 11:34 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday.

Less than an hour earlier, Californians approved a redistricting initiative that could help flip five House seats from Republicans to Democrats in next year’s midterm elections. “The Associated Press called the race when polls closed statewide, citing evidence of an ”overwhelming victory.”

Trump’s late post also came as New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani was delivering a victory speech in Brooklyn. In the days leading up to the mayoral election, the president had endorsed independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and threatened to withhold federal funds from the city if Mamdani was elected.

“We can respond to oligarchy and authoritarianism with the strength it fears, not the appeasement it craves,” Mamdani said. “After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him.”

Trump’s win in the 2024 presidential election did not lead to sweeping gains for the GOP during this off-year cycle.

Democrats won the gubernatorial race in New Jersey, the mayoral race in New York City, and every statewide election in Virginia. In Georgia, Democrats flipped a pair of seats on the influential Georgia Public Service Commission that had been held by Republicans for nearly two decades, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

And California’s passage of Proposition 50 could help Democrats shift the balance of power in the House with the GOP holding a slim five-seat majority.

CNN analyst Rahm Emanuel, the former mayor of Chicago, said, “The story of the night is a repudiation of the president. Everywhere you’re going, Democrats are outperforming (Republicans).”
