President Donald Trump railed against fellow Republican U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie May 20 – again –after the controversial Kentuckian continued to oppose a Trump-backed budget and immigration bill.

“I think he’s a grandstander, frankly,” Trump told reporters. “I think he should be voted out of office and I just don’t think he understands government.”

Massie said on Instagram he opposes Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” in part, because it will add $20 trillion of federal debt over 10 years.

In response to Trump’s remarks, Massie’s spokesperson provided The Enquirer with a link to a tweet by the congressman that said, “I usually don’t talk about private conversations in our GOP meetings but the rumors are true… President Trump said that although I have similar hair to @RandPaul , he thinks mine is better.”

Massie has irked Trump before

The firebrand congressman has been on the receiving end of Trump’s ire before.

Massie initially endorsed candidate and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis during his 2024 presidential bid, though he did endorse Trump just days before the election.

This year alone, Massie voted, at least initially, against Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House and against a Republican-backed government funding bill this spring.

Trump called for Massie to be primaried in March, which prompted a surge of fundraising money to roll in for the congressman.

Who is Thomas Massie?

Previously, Massie told The Enquirer, “I think every time that I’ve made my case to the people, even if it’s been contrary to what the president wanted at the time, it’s eventually worked out for me. And so I’m going to stick with doing what I think is right and making my case to the people.”

Massie represents almost two dozen counties in and around Northern Kentucky. All of those counties voted for Trump in the past three presidential elections.

But while other GOP politicians have lost reelection after losing Trump’s support, Massie has dominated every election cycle since he took office in 2012.

He was primaried by two candidates in 2024 and beat them with about 76% of the vote.

In the previous election, he won his primary against three opponents with about 75% of the vote and crushed his Democratic and Independent opponents with around 65% of the vote that fall.
