FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. — USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino said Tuesday he hadn’t slept much over the past two weeks.
Selecting the national team’s roster may not have been the only reason.
Multiple reports over the past 12 hours indicated that Pochettino already has an eye on his next stop, with The Athletic reporting Thursday morning that the Argentine met last week with representatives from Italian giants AC Milan to discuss their vacant head coaching job.
Massimiliano Allegri left Milan over the weekend after the club failed to qualify for the Champions League, along with the club’s sporting director, CEO and technical director.
Though Pochettino has always been seen as likely to leave the national team when his contract expires after the World Cup — he was connected to the job at Real Madrid a few months ago — taking a meeting so close to the competition has the potential to rub people the wrong way.
If he does ultimately land at Milan, it could mean a reunion with Christian Pulisic, though the USMNT’s leading man has been rumored to be on the move this summer as well.
Yunus Musah, who has largely been left out of the USMNT picture under Pochettino, is set to return to Milan next season as well, having spent most of this season on loan at Atalanta.
