FRANKLIN (Somerset) – Typically known for dispensing food and drinks, the new vending machine at Thomas Edison EnergySmart Charter School (TEECS) offers a different treat − one that feeds the mind.

The Pierce Street school celebrated the installation of a book vending machine on May 28 with an official unveiling and ribbon cutting.

The vending machine is intended to be a fun and innovative way to encourage literacy and a lifelong love of reading among students. It is stocked with a wide selection of books for K-6 readers of varied ages and reading levels.

This year the books are donated but going forward they will come from Scholastic.

The program is supported by tokens, a special currency that students can earn for positive behaviors in the classroom and throughout the school. This allows students to earn special tokens to “purchase” books of their choice and rewards academic achievement, positive behavior and participation in school programs.

“We’re excited to provide our students with access to books in a way that’s not only fun but also builds strong literacy habits,” stated Elementary Curriculum Supervisor Rajasri Govindaraju. “This vending machine represents our commitment to fostering a love of reading in every child.”
