(NewsNation) — Voters around Virginia head to the polls Tuesday to decide their next governor and a host of other statewide races. The winner of Tuesday’s gubernatorial race will go on to become the Commonwealth of Virginia’s first female governor.

Democratic gubernatorial nominee and former Rep. Abigail Spanberger is projected to win against Republican nominee and current Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. Spanberger held a comfortable lead in polls leading up to Election Day. Neither candidate faced a primary as the sole contender for their party’s ticket.

Virginia is one of two states to hold elections the year after a presidential election and is often seen as a bellwether of voter sentiment toward leaders in Washington, D.C., and a possible trend that carries through the midterms. This year, the Virginia races offer the Democratic Party a chance to regain a small bit of the ground they lost in 2024 when they lost the White House and the U.S. Senate and failed to gain control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

RECAP: Spanberger, Earle-Sears face off in Nexstar’s Virginia gubernatorial debate

During the sole debate of the race, Spanberger and Earle-Sears reportedly sparred over energy costs and affordability, the resurfaced violent text exchange by Democratic Attorney General candidate Jay Jones, transgender issues in schools and abortion access, among other issues.

Republicans and outside groups pumped money into Virginia races, largely focusing on Jones’ text scandal and bolstering his challenger, Jason Miyares, and gubernatorial candidate Earle-Sears. Another closely watched race is the one for lieutenant governor between Democrat Ghazala Hashmi and Republican John Reid.

It’s been 20 years since a split ticket was last seen in Virginia, and though Spanberger holds a comfortable lead in her race, the tighter attorney general’s race could result in one.

The elections to the Virginia House of Delegates will also be held concurrently with statewide elections, with all 100 seats up for election. Heading into the election, Democrats will be defending their narrow 51-49 majority in the chamber, with one open seat in a Republican district.

Polls in Virginia close at 7 p.m. EST on Tuesday. See results of Virginia’s statewide and House of Delegates races in the trackers below as they come in.
