Luis Rojas said he revisited his send of Giancarlo Stanton with two outs in the bottom of the fourth of Monday’s loss to the Dodgers in Game 3 of the World Series during the game and had no regrets when asked about it Tuesday.
Rojas said he based the send of the slow-footed Stanton on the fact that Anthony Volpe’s single to left forced Dodgers left fielder Teoscar Hernandez to his right.
“If the ball was lined right at someone, I wasn’t going to send him,” Rojas said before Game 4 on Tuesday at the Stadium. “With two outs, I wasn’t counting on a bad throw, I thought he could beat it based on how the play developed.”
Rojas added that the lack of offense by the Yankees did not factor in his decision, even with Stanton’s double earlier in the inning being the first hit allowed by Walker Buehler.
Anthony Rizzo was on deck.
“I know what the score was and everything else, but you can’t think about what else is going on or whether you think the next guy is going to get a hit,” Rojas said. “I make my decision based on the play in front of me.”
The Yankees ended up not scoring until Alex Verdugo’s two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.
