Election Day in the United States falls on Tuesday, Nov. 5. North Carolina, however, is one of many states that also allows early voting.

There are less than two months left until the 2024 presidential election. If you’re looking to cast your vote earlier than Nov. 5, here’s what you should know about the parameters of early voting and absentee voting in N.C.

How does early voting work?

The process of early voting is simple, but only available on certain dates. Find your voting precinct at gis.buncombecounty.org/districts/ and visit on one of the following dates to cast your vote early.

When is early voting in Buncombe?

  • Thursday, Oct. 17 – 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

  • Friday, Oct. 18 – 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

  • Saturday, Oct. 19- 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

  • Monday, Oct. 21 – 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

  • Tuesday, Oct. 22 – 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

  • Wednesday, Oct. 23 – 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

  • Thursday, Oct. 24 – 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

  • Friday, Oct. 25 – 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

  • Saturday, Oct. 26 – 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

  • Sunday, Oct. 27 – 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

When is the early voting deadline?

Early voting in Buncombe and Henderson counties begins Thursday, Oct. 17 at 8 a.m. and ends Saturday, Nov. 2 at 3 p.m.

How does absentee voting work?

Request an absentee ballot through the NCSBE Absentee Ballot Portal at votebymail.ncsbe.gov/app/home by 5 p.m. on the Tuesday before Election Day – Oct. 29 – at the latest. These requests are sent to the applicable county board of elections, which mail the ballot to the address provided.

Originally, ballots were intended to be sent out beginning Sept. 6, but because former presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. dropped out of the race and requested his name be taken off the ballot, the date was delayed to Sept. 20.

When is the absentee voting deadline?

The absentee ballot request deadline is Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. Absentee ballots must be returned to the Board of Elections in person or received by mail by the time polls close on Election Day: Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
