On Monday, Donald Trump was certified by lawmakers as the winner of the 2024 presidential election. Over the past several weeks, Trump and his team have announced numerous nominations for his Cabinet and staff.

As the Biden administration’s term winds down and Trump prepares to re-enter office, the next big event on the country’s calendar is Inauguration Day.

On this day, Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance will be officially sworn into office, marking the end of Joe Biden’s presidency and the beginning of a transition of power.

Here is everything you need to know about Inauguration Day including when it is, where it is, and the key events that will take place.

When is Inauguration Day 2025?

The 60th Inaugural Ceremonies will take place on Jan. 20, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Trump is expected to be sworn into office around noon.

Where will the inaugural ceremonies be held?

The swearing-in ceremonies for the president and vice president will take place on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol, according to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC).

Inauguration Day schedule of events

Several traditional, ceremonial and celebratory events will take place throughout the day on Jan. 20.

According to the JCCIC, these key events will take place in this order:

  • Procession to the Capitol: Members of the JCCIC will travel to the White House to escort the president-elect, vice president-elect and their spouses to the capital for the inaugural ceremonies. After a brief meeting, the outgoing president and the president-elect will proceed together to the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremonies.

  • The vice president-elect will be sworn into office.

  • The president-elect will be sworn into office.

  • After taking their oath of office, the newly sworn president will give their inaugural address.

  • Following the swearing-in ceremonies, the outgoing president and first lady will leave the Capitol to begin their “post-presidential lives.”

  • The newly sworn president will take their first official actions in the President’s Room, just off the Senate Chamber in the U.S. Capitol.

  • The newly sworn president will then be escorted to Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol for the traditional Inaugural Luncheon hosted by the JCCIC.

  • Following the ceremonies and the luncheon, the new president and vice president will make their way to the East Front steps of the Capitol where they will review military troops. They will then lead a procession of ceremonial military regiments, citizens’ groups, marching bands and floats down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House.

The day will end in celebration with inaugural balls and ceremonies.

Tickets to the swearing-in ceremonies are allocated and distributed through U.S. Congressional Member offices, according to the JCCIC. You can check with the senator or representative of your home state for tickets. You can also request tickets through the Presidential Inaugural Committee’s website at https://t47inaugural.com/tickets/.

Additionally, non-ticketed viewing areas will be open to the public on the National Mall, west of 4th Street NW, according to the JCCIC.
