Former President Donald Trump, now the president-elect, has won the 2024 presidential election, reelecting him to the highest office in America after he was defeated by President Joe Biden in 2020.

In just over two months, Trump will be sworn in and preside over America for the next four years in a second term that he’s proposed will include mass deportation of undocumented migrants in America and higher tariffs on foreign goods, according to the Associated Press.

Joining him is Vice President-elect JD Vance, the senator from Ohio and a Republican majority Senate. It hasn’t been determined which party has the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives as of Wednesday morning.

So, when will Trump begin his presidency? Here’s what to know.

When will Trump get sworn in?

Trump and Vance will be sworn in on Inauguration Day on Jan. 20, 2025, according to USA.gov. This is when they will take office, and their administration will begin.

Before Inauguration Day in Washington, D.C., the Electoral College will meet and vote for the president and vice president on Dec. 17. Those votes must be received by the president of the Senate and the national archivist by Dec. 25 this year. On Jan. 6, 2025, Congress will count the electoral votes and announce the results of the Electoral College.

What is the presidential oath of office?

Both Vance and Trump will recite an oath of office. The president’s oath is in accordance with the U.S. Constitution and says, according to USA.gov:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Vance will recite an oath that’s been in use since 1884 and is sworn by senators, representatives, and other federal employees:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

When is the next presidential election?

America will vote for its next president in 2028. Presidents can only serve two terms, so Trump will not be able to run for another term. Whoever wins the election will take office in 2029.
