John Mateer ‘full go’ for OU football at practice after injury return
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer is “not happy about” how the Red River Rivalry went against Texas, but he’s getting a full week of practice for South Carolina as he works his way back from hand surgery.
No. 13 Oklahoma (5-1, 1-1 in SEC play) will look to bounce back from its disappointing loss to Texas when it travels to face South Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 18.
Sooners quarterback John Mateer, who returned from a hand injury against the Longhorns, is also looking to get back on track against the Gamecocks after he threw three interceptions in the Red River Rivalry. He didn’t look quite like the player who had built up Heisman Trophy hype earlier in the season.

South Carolina entered the season ranked No. 13 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, but is unranked after starting the season with a 3-3 record. The Gamecocks are 1-3 in SEC play, but will still be a tough out regardless.
South Carolina is led by quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who’s one of the top projected quarterbacks of the 2026 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound redshirt sophomore has 1,010 passing yards with four touchdowns to two interceptions this season.
