Cardinals from around the world are at the Sistine Chapel in Rome for the papal conclave to select the new head of the Catholic Church following the April 21 death of Pope Francis.

The strictly secretive voting process to select the pope was enshrined in last year’s award-winning thriller “Conclave.”

The fictional depiction of the events is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

“Conclave” is a period drama revolving around the Vatican. In particular, the film follows Cardinal Thomas Lawrence, played by Ralph Fiennes, as he participates in one of society’s oldest and most secretive events: the selection of a new pope. As Cardinal Lawrence organizes a group of cardinals tasked with the selection, he ends up uncovering secrets and scandals of the Roman Catholic Church.

The movie is based on the 2016 book “Conclave,” written by Robert Harris, and earned an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. You can decide how accurate you think the movie “Conclave” is, but it might at least help you understand what’s taking place in international headlines this week.
