Colman Domingo is one of the co-chairs of the 2025 Met Gala, and so he’ll likely be one of the first celebrities to grace the red carpet on Monday night. And when he does, the Academy Award-nominated actor might be joined by his husband, Raúl Domingo.

The couple have been together for 20 years now, and their meet-cute is the stuff rom-coms are made of. (More on that below.)

Raúl Domingo has a diverse career background from the corporate world to the arts. And while he and Colman collaborate on a number of projects, other than supporting his husband at public events, Raúl maintains a relatively low profile.

1. He has a background in media and fashion.

Raúl Domingo began his career in regional and off-Broadway theater before moving into the luxury fashion sector, holding roles at Lanvin and Max Mara Group. He later led a business initiative at Hearst Media International. (Notably, Town & Country is a Hearst Magazine publication.)

2. He’s now a successful producer.

Raúl studied filmmaking at the Austin School of Film before co-founding Edith Productions with Colman Domingo in 2020. He co-wrote and co-directed the Oscar-shortlisted animated short New Moon in 2022 and produced the 2024 film Sing Sing, which earned three Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor for Colman. Raúl also produced AMC’s Bottomless Brunch at Colman’s and You Are Here, and developed It’s What’s Inside, a Critics Choice-nominated film sold to Netflix for $17 million. He now oversees all projects under the Edith banner.

3. He has some impressive hobbies.

According to his bio on Edith Productions, “Domingo is also an accomplished artist specializing in oils. If he is not in his art studio, you can see Raúl high above Southern California piloting his Cessna.”

4. They hosted a surprise wedding.

In 2014, the couple invited 25 guests to what was initially presented as a house party, according to GQ. Upon arrival, guests were greeted with, “Welcome to our wedding.” The informal ceremony featured Colman in a Hawaiian shirt, and the celebration continued with dancing until 4 a.m.

5. They got together through Missed Connections on Craiglist.

Before there was the surprise wedding, there was the one of greatest meet-cutes of all-time. The couple first saw each other from a distance and locked eyes…in a Walgreens parking lot in Berkeley, California in 2005. But it wasn’t until a few days later that they finally spoke to each other.

“You assume nothing ever comes of those Missed Connections columns,” said British interviewer Graham Norton on his BBC show in December 2024, queueing up the story for Colman to share.

“I see someone walking in [to the Walgreens], who has beautiful hair down to here, lip piercing, beautiful, beautiful. I see this guy, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God.’ And we look at each other. But I’m on the phone, and he’s talking to some woman, and she seems to be angry about something, so it’s a lot,” Colman recalls during the interview. “I get off the phone, they walk off down the street, but he keeps looking back. I wave, but he just keeps going. I’m just dumbfounded. I end up in a Blockbuster across the street, and I decide to look at my watch. It was 8:03 p.m. I decide, ‘Maybe I’ll come back next Sunday and he’ll be here.’ I’m that kind of hopeless romantic.”

Cut to three days later, and Colman was trying to buy a used computer. He was scanning Craigslist, and on a whim, thought about placing a Missed Connections posting of his own. He scanned and clicked to page two and there was a posting: “Saw you outside the Walgreens, Berkeley.” Raúl had already placed a Missed Connections posting for Colman. The pair met up three days later for their first date, and by the end of the date, their fate was sealed.

“I said, ‘I think I love you, and I think you’re about to change my life,’” Colman said. “I think I’m somebody who just believes magic happens. I really do believe that.”
