Influencer Johnny Somali has been sentenced to six months in jail.
Somali (real name Ramsey Khalid Ismael) was arrested in South Korea in 2024 on multiple charges including distributing fabricated sexually explicit content and being a public nuisance. The YouTube star pleaded guilty to most of the charges except for distributing sexual deepfake videos of Korean streamers and apologized for his actions.
“I did some foolish things under the influence of alcohol, and I realize the consequences. I sincerely apologize for this,” Somali told the court, per Legal Mindset. “Having been born and raised in the United States, I did not realize how serious the consequences of these actions, which would not be illegal in the United States, could be in Korea.”

Why Was Johnny Somali Arrested?
American influencer Johnny Somali traveled to South Korea in 2024, where he performed several controversial stunts in social media livestreams. At one point, he posted footage of himself kissing a statue honoring women who had been forced into sexual slavery during World War II.
“The defendant repeatedly committed crimes against unspecified members of the public to generate profit via YouTube and distributed the content in disregard of Korean law,” the court claimed to local reporters at the time.
Somali eventually apologized for his actions, claiming he was unaware of the statue’s significance. His post was deleted from social media before the influencer was indicted that same year on numerous public nuisance charges, including additional claims that he caused a commotion at a local Seoul convenience store.
NBC News reported that Somali was subsequently barred from leaving South Korea before his court hearing.
Johnny Somali Enters a Plea
Johnny Somali pleaded guilty to three counts pertaining to obstruction of business and violations of the Minor Offenses Act in March 2025, according to the Korea Herald. The YouTube star denied the charge of distributing sexual deepfakes.
“I’m remorseful,” Somali told the court in April 2026, per local outlets. “I’m sorry for my crimes.”
Weeks earlier, Somali pushed back via social media.
“It’s a fact corrupt governments don’t like when you fight back against bulls*** charges,” he claimed via X weeks before his sentencing. “I’ll be publically [sic] releasing all of the court documents, evidence and police interrogations very soon.”
Johnny Somali Sentenced to 6 Months in Prison
Johnny Somali was found guilty of all charges in April 2026. He was sentenced to six months in a specialized labor prison and denied a suspended sentence. Per the Legal Mindset X account, Somali will be given sex offender status.
Prosecutors initially sought a two-year prison sentence.
“We felt two or three years would be a fair amount of time in prison for him,” the lawyers told Korean media in April 2026. “Johnny Somali said that he wouldn’t spend one day in jail, so we’re very happy that he did get jail time.”
Johnny Somali’s Social Media History
Johnny Somali is a social media influencer known for sharing provocative content and online stunts. He’s since been banned from several streaming platforms over his acts.
“These 4 clips are why I am ‘indefinitely’ suspended on Kick for Hate Speech,” he wrote via X in January 2026, sharing footage from past livestreams where he used antisemitic and racist slurs. “Obviously, I was drunk and not serious at all, I would never say this sober. Not for harming anyone, harassing anyone or any kind of sexual misconduct.”
