The Democrats have no clear leader a year after President Donald Trump triumphed in the 2024 presidential election, according to a new poll.
The new Politico poll, released Friday, showed that those who voted for then-Vice President Kamala Harris last year remain undecided about who is the leader of the Democratic Party. The poll, conducted by Public First, showed that while Harris had the most support on the list, she was only recognized as the party leader by 16% of her own voters.
The top response for the question was “I don’t know,” which was selected by 21% of respondents. About 11% of respondents said that nobody was in charge of the Democratic Party, according to the survey.
Here are the top responses when Harris voters were asked who the leader of the Democrats is, according to Politico:
Meanwhile, those who voted for Trump overwhelmingly knew who the leader of the Republican Party was. The poll showed about 81% of Trump voters said the president was the leader of the GOP, while about 6% said they did not know. About 3% selected Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), and 2% chose Vice President JD Vance.
The poll was conducted by Public First from Oct. 18 to 21 among 2,051 U.S. adults. The overall margin of error is plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.
The poll was conducted before Democrats swept crucial elections in New Jersey, Virginia and New York City, giving the party a much-needed boost one year after Trump was elected to the White House. Despite that momentum, it’s not clear yet who will be the Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential election.
Harris and California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) are seen as likely contenders for the Democratic nomination. Other Democrats, including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have also been floated as possible candidates for the ticket.
