Kamala Harris did not attend the 2025 Oscars as we had all predicted.
The former Democratic presidential nominee failed to join the list of film’s biggest stars at the 2025 Oscars tonight. Why? Because she was not nominated for an award and, like us, she decided to watch from afar. Specifically, she was home with her husband, Doug Emhoff, eating Doritos.
“Oscars watch party prep,” Emhoff wrote over a photo shared on his Instagram Story of Harris looking comfy in a black sweatshirt layered over a white tee, a topknot on her head, diamond stud earrings, and no makeup. The snap shows her pouring Doritos into a white bowl while flashing a smile at the camera—or, more accurately, at Emhoff.
We first got word that Harris might attend the 97th Academy Awards when news broke that security in and around the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood was at an all-time high ahead of the ceremony.
“We live in a new evolving security environment,” a federal official told Deadline Sunday. “The expected attendance of the former vice president is a major factor in the added security,” said another law-enforcement officer.
It would have been a rare, ultraglamorous outing for the former U.S. vice president, who has been laying low since her 2024 presidential election loss to Donald Trump. While she has stayed out of politics since, she has made some sneaky appearances here and there as of late, including to two different Broadway shows in New York City—A Wonderful World and Gypsy—where she got standing ovations from the adoring crowds.
