The trailer for Y: Marshals, CBS’ Yellowstone spinoff, appeared to address where Kayce and Monica’s marriage stands.

In the official first look, which premiered on Monday, November 24, Luke Grimes‘ reprises his role as Kayce Dutton, who finds himself lost after the events in the Yellowstone finale.

“I fought every day to get out of the weight of Yellowstone. I’ve lost my teammates, my parents and even my brothers,” Kayce says in a voiceover as clips showed him going to a makeshift grave for a loved one.

Kayce hints that he wanted to start fresh. “Sometimes good men have to do bad things,” he adds. “But I am trying to find a new beginning.”

The next stop in the Yellowstone universe is a spinoff starring Luke Grimes’ character, Kayce Dutton. Yellowstone, which premiered in 2018, introduced viewers to the fictional Dutton family, who own the largest ranch in Montana. After finding success on Paramount, creator Taylor Sheridan grew the Yellowstone world with prequels 1883 and 1923. CBS ordered Y: […]

Elsewhere in the trailer, Kayce meets up with a group of Marshalls who he would be working with, which includes characters played by Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, Brett Cullen and Logan Marshall Green.

“May look like God’s country to you but the Devil is running free out there,” one of them tells Kayce, who questions what line he would be willing to cross when it came to taking someone’s life in the field.

Gil Birmingham makes a quick cameo as Thomas Rainwater to remind Kayce of who he really is, adding, “Duttons are all born with a killer’s instincts but you are not a killer, Kacye. You are a protector.” (Kayce’s son Tate was seen played by Brecken Merrill in a blink-and-you-miss it moment.)

The sneak peek shows no other glimpses of the Dutton family members such as Kelly Reilly as Beth or Cole Hauser as Rip, who have their own spinoff show on Paramount. There has also been no word on whether Wes Bentley will appear as Jamie Dutton.

The biggest absence, however, has been Kelsey Asbille, who played Kayce’s wife, Monica Dutton, on Yellowstone. She hasn’t been announced as a cast member on Y: Marshals yet but Us spotted a wedding ring on Kayce’s finger, which could hint that they are still married — or he is a widower — when the series premieres on March 1, 2026.

CBS is expanding the Yellowstone universe with a spinoff centered around Kayce Dutton — but which alums are reprising their roles on the new show? According to the official synopsis, Y: Marshals follows Kayce leaving “ranching life behind to join an elite unit” of U.S. Marshals. While “combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

“We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable,” Grimes, 41, shared in June to People about Y: Marshals. “If it was just like, ‘Well, he’s happy’ — we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool. But I’ll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting and it really roped me in and I think it will rope the audience in as well.”

He continued: “There’s going to be some familiar faces. There’s going to be a lot of new faces too, so we’ll see how that all feels. To go back into it in a new set of circumstances is going to be kind of transition.”

Y: Marshals is scheduled to premiere on CBS March 1, 2026, and will air on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET.
