Eric Swalwell’s relationship with a suspected Chinese spy went deeper than previously known — as newly released files reveal the disgraced former congressman confessed to sex with the known operative as part of a top-secret FBI probe.
The former East Bay congressman’s close relationship with Christine Fang, also known as “Fang Fang,” included “physical relations” on multiple occasions and a scheme to drum up campaign donations, according to investigative files made public by the White House Transparency Task Force.
In one instance, the suspected spy showed up at Swalwell’s apartment and the two “hooked up” after he had taken an Ambien — as he later claimed he barely remembered the event.
Swalwell was interviewed at the FBI’s Oakland outpost in 2015 and admitted to sex with the suspected spy after they met in 2012.
According to interview notes, Swalwell told investigators he grabbed a drink with Fang the two had “casual” relations on several occasions, often communicating via text message.
The newly released files were posted online Monday, a White House spokesperson confirmed.
Two investigative documents were created between roughly 2013 and 2015, when Swalwell was serving his first term in the House of Representatives,
Fang also helped to organize fundraisers for Swalwell in Las Vegas and California, according to a witness interview.
Fang was a suspected operative for the Chinese Communist Party and reportedly cultivated relationships with a network of politicians and other influencuers in California and beyond.
Swalwell said previously that he cut off contact with Fang and cooperated with investigators in the matter.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
