Kyle Whittingham has a plan, and he’s not sharing it.
The Michigan coach is playing coy with his quarterback situation heading into a matchup with No. 6 Indiana, not offering up if Bryce Underwood or Tommy Carr will be under center.
“We know exactly what we’re doing and the plan going forward,” Whittingham said. “We’re not going to tip our hand to the opponent. But we have a good plan in place.”
Carr led the Wolverines to a 21-18 win over Penn State on Saturday, stepping in for Underwood with Michigan trailing 3-0 at the half. The freshman guided the team on three touchdown drives, including taking it himself on a game-sealing 12-yard run with 2:58 left.
Underwood, meanwhile, completed just five of his 11 pass attempts for 43 yards and tossed two interceptions.
“Saw good stuff out of what Tommy did in that second half,” Whittingham said Monday. “He’s a real smooth guy, very efficient with his style.”
A Carr start would mark a massive move for Michigan, which improved to 4-2 with its first Big Ten win of the season.
Underwood, a sophomore with a $12 million NIL deal, has started 19 straight games for the Wolverines. His poor play this season — just 924 yards on a 58.1% completion rate with five touchdown passes to a conference-leading six interceptions — has led to rumors his continued starting status was due to his hefty contract.
Carr, the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr and younger brother of Notre Dame QB CJ Carr, was a four-star recruit, though Underwood was the top-ranked recruit in 2023 before committing to the Wolverines.
