Ray Knight is like plenty of Mets fans — he’s stopped watching the games.
“I started early this year following them and was intending to follow them, and then they were playing so badly that I just quit watching it,” the former Mets third baseman told Sports+ this week. “I was feeling badly for them, and it wasn’t making me real happy watching them play so poorly.”
These last-place Mets are a contrast to Knight’s tenure in Queens, which culminated with the team winning the World Series in 1986. The 40th anniversary of that championship (the last in franchise history) will be celebrated during a pregame ceremony on Saturday at Citi Field.
Knight, 73, plans to participate. It’s then he will get to relive his greatest career moments — he scored the winning run in an epic Game 6 of the World Series against the Red Sox and hit a go-ahead homer in Game 7. Knight was named the World Series MVP.
