WASHINGTON — President Trump offered three suggestions to Zohran Mamdani on his 100th day running New York City — saying he wanted the mayor to make his hometown “sparkle.”
Trump, 79, and Mamdani, 34, have maintained friendly relations following a November meeting in the Oval Office — despite Hizzoner continuing to call the commander in chief a “fascist,” a barb the president didn’t mention when asked about the mayor’s performance.
“Gotta lower taxes or everyone’s leaving. It’s very simple,” Trump told The Post when asked to review the socialist mayor, with whom he regularly swaps text messages.
“Got to clean up the city. The city is looking not good. You got to clean up Manhattan, clean it up, make it sparkle, number one, and you got to lower taxes, or everyone’s leaving,” Trump said.
“And you got to stop crime by calling in the United States government to let us help. Those three things.”
Mamdani has sought to partner with Trump on shared priorities, such as building more housing, and privately met with him on Feb. 27 to pitch a plan involving $21 billion in federal grants to build 12,000 units and deck over rail tracks in Sunnyside, Queens.
Trump was “enthusiastic” about the concept, the mayor’s spokesperson said at the time.
The president and Mamdani blasted each other ahead of last November’s mayor race, with Trump calling him a “communist” and going so far as to endorse his longtime foe, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who was running as an independent.
In November, Trump welcomed Mamdani to the Oval Office for a stunningly warm encounter where he said the fellow Queens native is a “very rational person” who is “going to surprise some conservative people, actually.”
Trump stepped in when a reporter asked Mamdani if he still considered Trump a fascist.
“That’s OK, you can just say yes,” Trump joked.
Mamdani said “yes” again in an interview published Friday by Politico.
